Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. Acquire a minimum of one year of skilled, professional, or technical work experience in Canada within 36 months before the application date.
2. Attain or surpass a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 5, referred to as “initial intermediate,” for NOC (National Occupational Classification) B jobs, or CLB 7, denoting “adequate intermediate proficiency,” for NOC skill level 0 or A jobs.
3. Have intentions to reside and work outside the province of Quebec. Individuals with work experience in Quebec who plan to settle in Quebec may apply through the Quebec Experience Class.
For the Canadian Experience Class, one year (equivalent to 12 months) of work experience is defined as a minimum of 1,560 hours of skilled work in Canada. These hours can be accumulated through either full-time or part-time employment.
Applicants can stay in Canada during the application process. However, the CEC also welcomes individuals who are no longer in Canada, provided they submit their application within three years of leaving their Canadian job.
The eligibility assessment for the Canadian Experience Class operates on a pass or fail basis. Meeting the minimum requirements qualifies the applicant to enter the Express Entry pool.
Important Note: Self-employment and work experience gained during full-time student status, such as co-op work terms, do not count as part of the CEC criteria.
The Immigration Process with the CEC:
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) utilizes the Express Entry system to manage skilled worker applications for three programs, including the CEC. If you have lived in Canada previously and have acquired eligible work experience here, you may be a strong candidate for the CEC. Additionally, you might also qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) or, if you have a background in trades, the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
The first step is to ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements of the CEC or one of the other Express Entry programs. If you are eligible, you can submit an Express Entry profile on IRCC’s website. Approximately every two weeks, IRCC conducts Express Entry draws, granting invitations for permanent residence to candidates with the highest Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores. CRS scores are calculated based on various factors, including age, education, language proficiency, work experience, Canadian experience, and more. If you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence, you must submit a complete application to IRCC within the specified timeframe. IRCC aims to process applications in six months or less.
